New initiative promotes healthy habits in Black community

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Zeta Kappa Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity released a new initiative to motivate Black community customers in the Des Moines metro to observe healthier behaviors. 

Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity is a member of the Nationwide Pan-Hellenic Council, a team of traditionally Black sororities and fraternities. The Zeta Kappa Lambda Chapter is just one of a lot of chapters unfold throughout the country. 

Zeta Kappa Lambda member Del Marion said the initiative was made in honor of fraternity member Broderick Daye, who passed absent in 2021. 

As the to start with aspect of the initiative, the chapter hosted the B.O.O. (Developing On Ourselves) Walk at Gray’s Lake on June 18 as a testomony to Daye’s like of walking.

The wander was meant to inspire extra Black males and ladies to remain energetic and get outside to better their actual physical and mental well being. 

“We want to instill in individuals to be knowledgeable of their health,” Marion claimed. “We you should not want to shed individuals prematurely.”

Another portion of the initiative is to persuade Black folks in the metro to stroll 30 minutes daily.

Chapter president Julian Neely explained this initiative is a way to support the local community as a total. 

“Some of the disparities we have in the Black community are substantial cholesterol, significant blood pressure. From time to time we actually really don’t focus on psychological wellness. By going for walks just 30 minutes a working day, it can help us mentally and then also bodily,” Neely stated.

The group users claimed its important for Black men in the metro to participate, as 38% of all Black men in excess of 20-many years-aged are viewed as over weight, in accordance to the CDC. 

The Zeta Kappa Lambda chapter programs to host a further B.O.O stroll following 12 months.
